While Paratus is looking to make a profit, last month Starlink promised South Africans interested in its services that it would roll out free internet to “thousands of rural schools” in South Africa, giving “millions of students access to information, learning tools, and the digital future they deserve.”

The promises come as the South African government have been wooing the Elon Musk-owned company with adjustments to licensing requirements.

A new report suggests that if Starlink receives its license, it will have to fork out over R2 billion in investments to operate in South Africa.
